Ingredients

  • 1 shot about 30 ml freshly brewed espresso
  • 1 cup 240 ml whole milk (or your favorite alternative)
  • Foamed milk from the same cup of milk
  • Optional garnish: 2–3 coffee beans or a sprinkle of cocoa powder

Equipment

  • Espresso Machine – for brewing a strong espresso shot.
  • Alternative: A moka pot, AeroPress, or pod machine can also work.
  • Milk Frother or Steam Wand – to heat and froth the milk for that creamy foam layer.
  • Alternative: Use a handheld electric frother or a French press to froth warm milk manually.
  • Tall Glass Mug or Latte Glass – clear glass is best to showcase the beautiful layers of milk, espresso, and foam.
  • Milk Pitcher – for steaming and pouring milk smoothly.
  • Spoon – for layering the espresso and scooping foam.
  • Thermometer (optional) – to check milk temperature (ideal range: 140–155°F / 60–68°C).
  • Saucer and Small Spoon (optional) – for presentation when serving.

Method

  1. Heat and Froth the Milk: Pour the milk into a pitcher and steam it using your espresso machine’s steam wand until it reaches about 150°F (65°C). Create a good amount of foam — you’ll want the milk to separate into three layers: hot milk, a creamy middle, and foamy top.
  2. Pour the Milk into the Glass: Carefully pour the steamed milk into your glass mug. Let it sit for about 30 seconds to allow the layers to settle.
  3. Add the Espresso: Slowly pour the freshly brewed espresso through the milk foam. Aim to pour gently in the center so that the espresso settles between the milk and foam, creating the signature three-layer look.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Top with a few coffee beans or a light dusting of cocoa powder.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Milk Matters: Whole milk creates the creamiest texture and most stable foam, but oat or almond milk can be used for a lighter or dairy-free version.
  • Perfect Temperature: For the best flavor, don’t overheat the milk — keep it below 155°F (68°C) to preserve its natural sweetness.
  • Layering Trick: Pour the espresso slowly over the back of a spoon to create distinct layers without mixing.
  • Flavor Boosters: Add a teaspoon of vanilla syrup, caramel, or hazelnut syrup before pouring in the espresso for a sweet twist.
  • Iced Version: For summer, make an Iced Latte Macchiato by using cold milk, ice cubes, and chilled espresso.
  • Presentation Tip: Serve in a clear glass mug to show off the beautiful separation of milk, espresso, and foam — it’s part of the charm!
  • Pairing Ideas: Enjoy with a buttery croissant, biscotti, or a slice of coffee cake for a true café experience.
